Lifelong friends enjoy the rivalry and camaraderie of the Magic City Classic

Birmingham natives Jennifer Wycoff, left, and Ann Murphy have always been on opposite sides.

As teenagers, Ann graduated from Ensley High School and Jennifer graduated from Jackson-Olin High School. When they went off to college, Ann picked Alabama State University and Jennifer picked Alabama A&M University. And when they pledged sororities, Ann pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Jennifer pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

But for them, these differences don’t stop them from connecting for the Magic City Classic in Birmingham. They will tailgate together at Legion Field, where their gathering spot will feature decorations for both schools this weekend.

“It’s so much fun to be with family and friends and reunite with classmates you haven’t seen in a while,” Ann said. “This is my whole reason for getting together. We are great friends.”

As excitement builds for the 82nd Annual Magic City Classic, Jennifer is predicting a good turnout for tailgating and for the game this year. “More people are just ready to be with each other. Over the years, it’s just been hard to do that,” she said. “The weather is also going to be good.”

For as long as they’ve known each other, the women have been rivals. But their friendship is an unbreakable bond that triumphs competition on any day.

“We cheer for each other. We support each other regardless of the rivalry,” Jennifer said.
