After years of institutional instability, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) has consolidated a structured and sustainable management model marked by record-breaking financial results, a historic surplus, world-class infrastructure and consistent international success across both national teams and domestic clubs.
In this current cycle, AFA has entered the most successful period in its history, with 79 international tournaments won over the last eight years.
AFA: A Structured Rebuild Backed by Results and Numbers
Since the current leadership team took office in 2017 — with Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia as president and Pablo Tovigginoserving as treasurer and his closest executive partner — the Argentine Football Association has undergone a deep institutional and financial recovery following a prolonged period of crisis. That era was defined by mounting debt, limited autonomy and a loss of credibility that raised concerns throughout Argentine football.
The situation deteriorated to such an extent that FIFA intervened in 2016 to help normalize governance and restore institutional order.
Financial Performance and Institutional Stability
One of the most significant indicators of change in the current cycle is that AFA no longer receives subsidies from the Argentine federal government. The organization is now fully self-financed through its own revenues, commercial agreements and international friendly matches.
At its 2025 General Assembly, AFA approved a historic financial statement showing a surplus of ARS 11.138 billion, the highest in its history, underlining sustained financial growth and long-term stability.
Additional key indicators reinforce this trend:
Net worth increased by 21 percent between 2024 and 2025, rising from ARS 53.043 billion to ARS 64.182 billion.
The debt ratio declined from 82.2 percent in 2021 to 53.5 percent in 2025.
AFA currently maintains an organizational structure of approximately 1,300 employees, including coaching staffs, medical teams, support personnel and administrative workers.
Salaries are paid in full and on time each month, with an estimated monthly payroll of ARS 4 billion, entirely without public subsidies.
Infrastructure and Professionalization
The operational center of Argentine football is now the Lionel Andrés Messi Training Complex in Ezeiza, a high-performance facility where 24 national teams train across all disciplines: men’s and women’s football, futsal and beach soccer.
On a daily basis:
Around 1,000 people circulate through the complex.
Approximately 400 athletes are fed daily through its dining facilities.
Under the current administration, AFA also promoted the professionalization of all men’s football divisions and consolidated the women’s Primera División A, a landmark decision for the development and sustainability of the women’s game in Argentina.
Projects are currently underway for the construction of a new training complex dedicated exclusively to women’s national teams, further strengthening structural support and institutional commitment to gender equity.
International Projection and Global Brand Positioning
The global brand value of Argentine football was formally presented in London in collaboration with Brand Finance, reinforcing AFA’s institutional and commercial projection on the international stage and positioning Argentine football among the most recognized sporting brands worldwide.
This international expansion has been accompanied by new strategic commercial agreements, including the addition of Banco Supervielle as a regional sponsor of the national teams, further consolidating the economic model developed by the current AFA administration.

The Turning Point: Governance and Credibility
AFA’s transformation was neither immediate nor simple. Restoring institutional prestige required structured governance, transparency and sustained administrative work to rebuild credibility among clubs, international bodies and supporters.
Conclusion
The Argentine Football Association has transitioned from a period of disorder to a modern management model that combines clear financial discipline, a historic surplus, international-level infrastructure and comprehensive development across all football disciplines, while continuing to support and defend the strong social role played by clubs throughout Argentina.
Under the leadership of Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia and Treasurer Pablo Toviggino, these outcomes are supported by concrete figures — 56 international titles won by national teams and 23 international titles achieved by domestic clubs — reflecting not only economic balance but also global projection and a solid foundation for sustained growth.
While challenges remain, recent achievements have consolidated AFA as a stronger, more transparent and more competitive institution, both domestically and internationally, as it looks ahead with optimism toward the pursuit of a fourth FIFA World Cup title at the next upcoming tournament.
