The Planning Department is the authoritative body that assigns addresses for the City of Chesapeake. Please contact the Planning Department's Address Coordinator or designee to have an address assigned or verified.

For a Pre-Existing, Recorded Residential Subdivision

Customer needs to bring to the Planning Department:

  • Lot Number and Tax Identification NumberA 13-digit tax ID Number can be obtained from the Real Estate Assessor's Office or on the corner of your Real Estate tax bill.
  • Subdivision Name
    • For an Individual Lot

    Customer needs to bring to the Planning Department:

  • Site Plan showing location of lot
  • Lot Number and Tax Identification Number
    • For a Commercial Building

    Customer needs to bring to the Planning Department:

  • Site Plan showing location of buildings
  • Tax Identification Number
    • Explanation of Subdivision Process

    After a subdivision application is approved, the subdivision plat is taken to the Deed Room on the 3rd floor of the Circuit Court Building for recordation. The subdivision plat is a legal document once the recordation is complete and the fee is paid.

    Once the subdivision is recorded, a receipt is given to the person whom is recording the plat, and this receipt is then presented in the Planning Department as proof of recordation. The subdivision is now ready for addressing. The Planning Department does not release addresses until a plat is recorded.

    The addresses are added to the plat and entered into the Geographic Information System (GIS) and Real Estate Database by the Address Coordinator. In addition, any new building in Chesapeake is also assigned an address. From this point, the addresses are distributed to external utility companies, U.S. Post Office, Emergency Services, and internal city departments.
